EPWForge — Generate, Morph, and Download Weather Files for Building Energy Simulation

EPWForge generates and morphs weather files (.epw, .ddy, .csv) for building energy simulation tools — EnergyPlus, OpenStudio, IES VE, eQUEST, and any workflow that consumes EPW. Drop a pin anywhere on the world map to generate a custom Typical Meteorological Year (TMYx) for that exact location, or pick from ~17,000 OneBuilding stations worldwide.

Capabilities

  • TMYx generation — present-day typical-year synthesis via ISO 15927-4 Finkelstein-Schafer from ERA5 reanalysis (1950–present), or pass-through of OneBuilding-published TMYx files for known stations.
  • AMY (Actual Meteorological Year) — single-year specific historical weather from ERA5. Pick a year (hottest, coldest, most humid, or any year since 1950) for stress-testing against observed extremes.
  • CMIP6 future-climate morphing — apply SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0 projections at horizons 2030–2100. Belcher 2005 mean-shift hybridised with UKCP18 / NOAA Atlas 14 diurnal anomalies. (SSP5-8.5 available as an opt-in extreme stress-test scenario.)
  • Urban Heat Island — Stewart & Oke 2012 Local Climate Zone presets for suburban, urban, and dense-urban contexts.
  • Extreme event injection — heatwave, cold snap, hot-humid, cold-windy, wildfire smoke. AR6-scaled intensity. Events stitched at the baseline file's hottest or coldest 14-day window.
  • ASHRAE 169 design conditions — heating 99.6% / 99%, cooling 0.4% / 1% / 2% dry-bulb and wet-bulb, evaporation and dehumidification variants. Computed from the modified hourly distribution; ASHRAE Handbook 2025 values preserved verbatim for unmodified downloads.
  • Output formats — EnergyPlus (.epw + .ddy + .stat), CSV hourly, PVsyst weather files, ESP-r .clm. Bundled .zip with statistics summary.

For AI agents

EPWForge exposes a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server at https://epwforge.com/api/mcp with four consolidated tools: find_station, analyze_weather, chart_weather, and generate_weather_file. Connect from Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, Cursor, Goose, or VS Code via the standard MCP wire protocol. Read-only tools work without authentication; downloads require a free or paid API key. Tool responses include an agent_guidance field with judgment-shaping copy so agents land on the right action based on context. See /mcp for the connection guide.

Pricing

Credit-based. Every plan gets every feature; credits gate volume. Free tier includes 5 lifetime credits. Starter $49/mo (10 credits), Pro $149/mo (50), Pro+ $249/mo (100). One-time top-up packs available: 5 credits / $50, 20 / $180, 50 / $400. See /pricing.

Methodology & validation

Per-station bias correction validated against 16,906 OneBuilding ASHRAE Handbook reference stations (median cooling DC bias reduced from −0.80 °C to −0.34 °C; standard deviation reduced 6–11% across heating and cooling). Generated EPW and DDY files runtime-tested in EnergyPlus 25.2. Full methodology and validation numbers at /transparency.
